Kate & Pete Focus of New Cavalli Campaign
The UK's premiere rock and roll couple, supermodel Kate Moss and rocker Pete Doherty, are starring in their first his and hers photo shoot for the latest Roberto Cavalli advertising campaign. In the strongest signal yet that Kate and Pete are to become the next super brand, the pair posed for pictures by Mert and Marcus in Ibiza after Cavalli saw them together and invited Pete onto the shoot, which was originally designated as solely Kate's.
"It happened quite casually. I was immediately struck by their intensity and freedom of the relationship. They're very sweet," explained the designer on his decision to include Pete. "Kate brings beauty, intensity and personality with a hippie spirit that is perfectly in tune with my collection. Pete is a dreamer and a rebel. He's authentic and oozes a new, unexpected brand of sexiness, in sync with the spirit of the Cavalli man," he added.

Stella McCartney & PETA Go Virtual
Stella McCartney is dipping her toe into the virtual community of Second Life to stage a peaceful antifur protest. On July 12, the designer and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will cohost an event on a specially created island in the virtual world. Visitors to the island - which is inspired by the English countryside, complete with stables, picnic tables and a Linda McCartney veggie burger stall - will be able to show their support for PETA in virtual terms. All visitors will receive a selection of antifur accessories for their Second Life character to wear; they can donate money in Linden dollars, the community's currency, which the animal rights group will be able to exchange for real U.S. dollars, and they will be able to dress their character in a T-shirt bearing the slogan "I'd rather be pixilated than wear fur."
"Sometimes it's nice to have a bit of humor on serious subjects," said McCartney, whose island will be open through July 29, in a statement. Those who take a trip to the online idyll will be able to scoop real-world prizes, too. A competition will run until July 19, for which visitors can submit a new PETA slogan, based around its tag line, "I'd rather go naked than wear fur." Prizes will include two tickets to McCartney's spring 2008 show in Paris, one of the designer's Appaloosa bags and her entire Care skin care line.

Fashion Icon Claiborne Dies
Claiborne died Tuesday at the New York Presbyterian Hospital after suffering from cancer for a number of years, said Gwen Satterfield, personal assistant to Claiborne. She was 78. With husband Art Ortenberg and partners Leonard Boxer and Jerome Chazen, Claiborne launched her label in 1976 after working for years as a relatively unknown dress designer. The brand emphasized ensemble sportswear, quality and keeping the price tag below that of other designers.
Fashion designer Liz Claiborne revolutionized the way working women put together their wardrobes because she was one of them. She made it easy for them as they pioneered up corporate ladders in the 1970s and 1980s, offering coordinated outfits at once serious and stylish, but also affordable. The new approach to dressing revolutionized the department store industry, which had focused on stocking pants in one department and skirts in another.... full story at CNN
Interesting Points: - Claiborne launched her company in 1976
- retired from management in 1989
- Liz Claiborne Inc. was first company founded by a woman to be in Fortune 500
- Her designs catered to the growing number of women entering work force

iPhone May Not Rock Music Industry
LOS ANGELES - Carlos Gomez could be the recording industry's ideal mobile music customer. His phone is his music player of choice and he spends about $100 a month buying songs for it -often on impulse after hearing a tune on his car radio. That's why he's not buying an iPhone. It's not that he doesn't want one. The 24-year-old office clerk is mesmerized by the look and feel of Apple Inc.'s uber-sleek new phone that's a combination cell phone, iPod media player and Web-browsing gadget. He particularly likes its touch-screen navigation.
But Gomez says he won't buy the handset because users can't use it to buy and download music over a wireless network. Instead, iPhone owners will have to buy music via their computers and then download it to their phones, a process called side-loading.
Some analysts say mobile music sales will be dampened as long as users are limited to loading music on their phones via their PCs and Macintosh computers, and blocked from buying music wirelessly. "The whole idea of on-the-go instant gratification isn't there," said Ted Cohen, managing partner of media consulting firm Tag Strategic.... Washington Post

Winehouse Cuts Self During Interview
Winehouse: "I'm not in this to be a f**king role model"
Amy Winehouse Shocks Reporter With Self-harm.... British singer Amy Winehouse shocked a reporter at U.S. rock magazine Spin by self-harming herself with a broken mirror during a recent interview. The Rehab star etched "I Love Blake" - a reference to new husband Blake Fielder-Civil - into her stomach with a shard of broken mirror left over from a photoshoot. And the outspoken singer told the magazine her rough-and-ready attitude to life and success allows her to be as dangerous and controversial as she wants to be. Winehouse, who recently confessed she was considering quitting the music industry to become a full-time wife and mum, explained, "I'm not in this to be a f**king role model. I don't care about any of this and I don't have much of an opinion of myself. I don't think people care about me. I made an album I'm very proud of and that's it."

Why Germany Hates Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise may suit up nicely as an American flying ace or an acrobatic crime buster, but when it comes to portraying Germany's most beloved anti-Nazi, Germans would prefer a different actor, bitte. Cruise is due to play German officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, celebrated for trying to kill Hitler in 1944, but the German Defense Ministry has warned that if Cruise gets the role, Ministry sites will be off-limits to the filmmakers. The reason? Because Cruise, as the Defense Ministry puts it, "has publically professed to being a member of the Scientology cult."
The German authorities have had a long history of run-ins with the Church of Scientology, which they accuse of masquerading as a church in order to make money - a charge the group vehemently rejects. Germany, along with several other European countries, has aggressive laws targeting groups that they deem to be cults.... TIME

Diaz Apologizes for Bag Faux Pas
HOLLYWOOD - Cameron Diaz has issued an apology after 'insulting' locals on a visit to Peru by carrying a bag emblazoned with a communist slogan. The Shrek actress was visiting the Inca city of Machu Picchu on Friday using an olive green bag with a red star and the words "Serve the People" written in Chinese. The message was seen by many as a reference to Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. Zedong's Maoist Shining Path insurgency fought the Peruvian government in the 1980s and early 1990s, killing almost 70,000 people. Human rights activists described the actress' bag as "inappropriate". However, Diaz has now apologized for her ignorance. She says, "I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it. I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history."...Hollywood.com

Fashion Rocks! Announces Line-Up
Fashion rocks! And since clothing can bounce from grunge to girly glamour, it's no wonder musicians are so good at hitting all the right style notes.
To honor the synergy between singers and their passion for fashion, the Conde Nast Media Group is gearing up for its Fourth Annual Fashion Rocks event, airing September 7th at 9 p.m. on CBS.
The star-studded blowout appropriately kicks off New York's Fall Fashion Week with the hottest bands and bods. OBO, an international fashion production company that's in on the gig this year (they produced the Victoria's Secret va-va-voom 2007 show), will get the crowd pumped by sending models down catwalks while the likes of CARRIE UNDERWOOD croon and FERGIE boom live on-stage.
Other "Fashion Rocks" musical performers for the two-hour event include AEROSMITH, ALICIA KEYS, AVRIL LAVIGNE, FALL OUT BOY, FERGIE, JENNIFER HUDSON, JENNIFER LOPEZ, LUDACRIS, MARTINA McBRIDE, SANTANA and USHER.
Can't get enough models and rockers? Vogue magazine's Editrix, ANNA WINTOUR, serves up more info on how to hit the fashion high notes, too, with Fashion Rocks™ magazine, out this September.

Katherine Heigl to Wed at Christmas
Heigl to wed at Christmas...
Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl is to wed her rocker fiance Josh Kelley two days before Christmas, according to U.S. reports. Friends say the actress chose the date in the middle of a hiatus from the medical drama, so she could get used to being Mrs Kelley and take time to plan and prepare for her big day. An insider tells America's Life & Style magazine, "She'll be in the middle of a holiday break for her show, and she'll still have enough time after for a short honeymoon. "Everyone is already so full of cheer just before Christmas, so, to throw in a wedding at that time - she just loved the idea. "Her idea is to get married under this snow covered tent at her property with Josh in rural Utah. She wants glamour, so the dress is upscale. But she also wanted everything to feel down-to-earth, natural and beautiful." The couple met on the set of Kelley's Only You music video, in which she played his sweetheart, in 2005.

Victoria Beckham defends line after it's called "Cheap"
Victoria Beckham's new range of jeans have been branded "cheap" by her former fashion colleague. Rock and Republic's UK distributor, Robert de Keyser of Dekeyser Fashions, has slammed her latest designs, claiming they're over-priced. Keyser, who sold Victoria's Rock and Republic designs in Britain, said of her DVB jeans line: "The new Victoria Beckham range appears to be seriously over-priced for a line made, unlike other premium denims, in China out of a cheap fabric. "Whatever Victoria learned from Rock and Republic appears to have been lost." However, a source close to the mother-of-three refutes his claims, saying: "Early samples were made in China but the main range is made in Canada. They are a must-have designer item and the materials and methods used to make them reflect that." Victoria, whose new jeans cost $249USD a pair, ended her association with Rock and Republic last year under a cloud of controversy. The company were said to be furious after she quit and wouldn't let her use the embroidered crown logo sewn on the pockets of the denim range. Victoria, 33, refuses to be drawn into the row and said she respects Rock and Republic. Her spokesman said: "Victoria had a happy working relationship with Rock and Republic and she's not going to start being negative about them now."

Fendi to hold fashion show on the Great Wall
Italian luxury group Fendi will hold a fashion show on the Great Wall in China in October as parent company, LVMH Moet Hennessy-Louis Vuitton, seeks to double its sales by 2008. "It's true," said a spokeswoman for LVMH, confirming a report in France's Les Echos newspaper. LVMH Chairman Bernard Arnault has said repeatedly he sees potential for Fendi to become a "star brand" alongside LVMH stablemates such as leather-goods maker Louis Vuitton and TAG Heuer watches. "We can't be a global luxury group without a strong Italian brand," Fendi Chief Executive Michael Burke told Les Echos.

Bella Freud Exits Biba for Own Line
Bella Freud has quit Biba, the label she was hired three seasons ago to transform from Sixties icon into a 21st century must-wear fashion house. The British designer is now said to be turning her attention to a new own-name collection, one that promises to include luxe cashmere and elegant T-shirts. Freud told Women's Wear Daily, "Even when I was working with Biba, I was doing my own collection on a minute scale," she continued. "Now, I really want to put all of my energy into it. It's still going to be small, but it will reflect all my passion and imagination." Freud's debut collection will be unveiled as an exhibition with the Belarus-born model and photographer Elle Muliarchyk, at London's Frieze Art Fair in October. The designer has also created a capsule collection, which will go on sale at Dover Street Market at the end of June. Biba has yet to comment on her replacement.

Toronto's first Fashion and Design Festival
The worlds of design, music and dance will collide at one of the busiest hubs in downtown Toronto later this summer at a three-day event showcasing the best in local and international fashion. The catwalk will meet the sidewalk at the inaugural Fashion and Design Festival - Toronto being held from August 23-25. The event will include 30 world-class fashion shows at Yonge-Dundas Square, which style-watchers in Canada's largest city can check out free of charge. In addition to the shows, organizers have also come up with six special events designed specifically for the festival, which they hope will transform the bustling intersection into "fashion central." Among them, "I Love Kyoto" will put the spotlight on designers of ethical labels on the cutting edge of fashion, while "Fashion School Special" will feature graduates of the city's leading fashion design schools showcasing their works. The festival will close out Saturday night with the lingerie special, featuring women walking the runway in elegant undergarments under the moonlight. The event has been wowing crowds in fashion-forward cities for the past seven years. Other cities that have hosted the fashion extravaganza include New York, London and Tokyo. Earlier this month, the festival was held in Montreal during the Canadian Grand Prix.

AGUILERA BUYS OSBOURNE MANSION
CHRISTINA AGUILERA has reportedly bought OZZY and SHARON OSBOURNE's former Beverly Hills home. The rock couple turned the estate into a reality TV mecca after shooting The Osbournes at their Los Angeles mansion. The Osbournes put the Doheny Drive estate on the market in April (07) after Ozzy confessed, "I don't want to stay in that house any more... The house holds bad memories for me because it reminds me of the terrible time Sharon got cancer and of times when me and the kids were doped out of our minds." Reports in America suggest Aguilera paid an undisclosed sum for the mansion and plans to turn it into her Los Angeles base.

MySpace Launches Fashion News
MySpace, in an effort to tap into the rapidly expanding internet fashion community, has launched a new section in it's news area. It functions essentially like a technorati page, collecting headlines from top fashion sites and blogs from all over the net. While still in it's beta stages, the site has a rating system built in so that users can weigh in on topics internally through the MySpace environment. All well and good, but MySpace is a bit late to the online fashion game. Iqons.com, which launched earlier this year, has already been dubbed the "MySpace for Fashion." Following in their footsteps, Nick Knight added a social networking section to his SHOWstudio.com, enabling users to post profiles and samples of their work for others to browse and comment on. While MySpace is focusing more on the news side of fashion, the other sites seem to have a pretty solid handle on the networking side of things. Perhaps a showdown for user-ship is in order; or, in this case, a walkoff might be more appropriate.

I'm Not a Plastic Bag...
IN Britain, it's the accessory of the season, but will American women decide to make an eco-friendly fashion statement their bag, baby? We'll find out tomorrow - when a $15 medium-size canvas tote emblazoned with "I'm not a plastic bag" hits stores in New York and Los Angeles. The message bag was created by British accessories designer Anya Hindmarch, who's known for her otherwise pricey pouches, in partnership with nonprofit campaign group We Are What We Do. The aim is to encourage fashionistas to replace plastic grocery-store bags with this not-so-plastic alternative. In spite of the dubious premise that fashionistas ever go to grocery stores - or even eat - the bags are causing quite a stir. Keira Knightley was spotted with one in England. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon and Petra Nemcova both ordered bags and sported them full of groceries in L.A. Soon after, it sold out in stores and was going for as much as $675 on eBay...NYPost

Fashion World Mourns Death of Ferre, 62
MILAN, Italy (AP) - Gianfranco Ferre, the Italian designer known as the "architect of fashion" for his structured, sculpted shapes and for his groundbreaking tenure at Christian Dior, died Sunday, a hospital said. He was 62. Ferre was taken to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, Italy, on Friday after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage. The hospital, in a statement authorized by Ferre's family, said he died at 9 p.m. (3 p.m. ET) Sunday. Ferre started his career as an accessories and jewelry designer, and then moved on to clothes. His unofficial title as Italy's architect of fashion came thanks to the degree in architecture he obtained in 1969 from Milan's Polytechnic Institute that inspired his designs. He started his own company in the mid-1970s, but his major leap came in 1989, when he was tapped by Bernard Arnault to be the top designer for Christian Dior. At the time, it was almost unheard of for a non-French designer to take the reins of the venerable Parisian house.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen Designs for Can Couture
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, has created a contemporary armchair entirely from recycled drinks cans. The UK interior designer was commissioned by Can Couture to make the Can Can Chair using nothing but cans he and his family collected from around the house.
As a nation Britain produces enough rubbish to fill the Albert Hall every two hours. But experts have determined that 60% of everything we throw away could be recycled. The eight billion drinks cans alone that we consume each year, if recycled, would produce enough energy to light every household in Britain for a year.
Laurence said: "I really enjoy working with new material so the idea of using recycled drinks cans to produce an elegant, yet flamboyant chair was a huge challenge for me." His chair will be displayed at City Hall in London and is set to embark on a European tour portraying how design and looking after the environment can go hand in hand. The Can Can Chair will return to the UK in the autumn when it will be auctioned off for charity.

Isabella Blow Foundation
Detmar Blow is planning to set up a foundation to look after his late wife's collection of hats. Blow was responsible for kick starting the careers of Alexander Mc Queen. Sophie Dahl and Philip Tracey. Detmar said: "Issy was a walking art form. I'm hoping all the people she helped in her life will cough up some money to get this up and running." Many of her trademark hats are already on display in St Petersburg and are expected to show in New Zealand, Venice, Istanbul and New York before returning to the UK. Detmar and Isabella's sisters are also considering the possibility of a new museum dedicated to Blow, which would exhibit her extensive collection of designer and couture clothes and shoes as well as her headwear.

Sarah Jessica Parker Debuts BITTEN
Can sensibly priced clothing from a down-to-earth actress stand out in an increasingly crowded market for celebrity-branded fashion? Sarah Jessica Parker's bubbly personality was evident as she strode through the Manhattan Mall's Steve & Barry's store Thursday at the launch of her clothing line, Bitten, greeting shoppers with a cheerful, "Hi guys!" With Bitten, Parker joins Madonna, Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and other stars who are seeking success with celebrity clothing collections. They haven't saturated the market yet but we're getting kind of close," said Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at NPD Group Inc., a Port Washington, N.Y.-based market research firm. "Celebrity branding makes it easy for a company to a sell a brand because it becomes a talking point." So far the lines have done well, but since most are in their first season, there isn't much to compare them with, Cohen said.Parker and Steve & Barry's -- best known for its inexpensive college apparel and $14.98 Starbury One sneaker -- are hoping the Bitten line stands out because of its cheap prices. While other celebrity lines sell items for up to $100 or more, nothing in Bitten's 500-piece collection, Steve & Barry's first for women, is over $19.98, and sizes range from 2 to 20.That mass accessibility is what attracted Parker to the project...amNewYork
